SoundClash Interviews: Maylee Todd

Many of you may remember when a lion posing as Maylee Todd tore up the Harbourfront centre during the 2010 Fortune Cooking Festival and if you don’t check out the video below.  Well her charismatic stage presence and soul pop sound is back, this time for Soundclash 2012, and she was nice enough to answer some questions we had. Check it out:

The video for Aerobics in Space is fantastic.  Have you always wanted to be a superhero?

I’ve always been inspired by female superheros. There wasn’t always alot of female superheros growing up and currently. But when I was introduced to them I was inspired by their courage and strength.

You play the Paraguayan Harp in the video for “Heart Throb” and are known for using exotic instruments.  Is there any instrument out there you’ve always wanted to play but haven’t had a chance yet?

I’m recently playing the bass, and would like to continue playing it. I’m also interested in the drums.

Your songs combine a variety of genres, but often have a bossa nova feel.  How were you first exposed to that style?

My parents were fans of Brazilian music, they played their records around the house when I was growing up.

What’s your favourite place to be in Toronto?

My favorite place in Toronto would be Kensington market. There’s so many different types of food, shops, and venues. A great place for a first time traveler to Toronto.

What can you tell us about your upcoming project?

I am currently working on the Toronto Island for the traditions program. I am basically building a large woman mash up. With attributes that have inspired me in my past, and present work.
