Shake a tail feather with Shindig and DJ Misty Rock n’ Roll

On the last Friday of every month at The Piston Bar — 937 Bloor St. W. in Toronto — there’s a little Shindig going down and we’re so excited to bring this party to Harbourfront Centre’s Natrel Rink this Saturday! Shindig is Toronto’s only all-vinyl party dedicated to the sounds of 1950’s and 1960’s R&B, soul and rock n’ roll, and the one and only DJ Misty is going to be joining the Shindig crew with her selection of 45RPM records to make you shake, rattle and skate.

1 LOVE TO return for their 4th annual holiday skating party

‘Tis the season. As a staple in our DJ Skate Nights series, Bryan Brock, Dean of the Academy of Creative Art for the REMIX project, and Much Music’s Rapcity host, T-Rexxx, are bringing their annual 1 LOVE TO holiday skating party back to the Natrel Rink for the fourth year in a row. Joined by their official DJ,  DJ DLUX, as well as DJ Lissa Monet, they promise an evening of hot mixes, hot drinks and holiday cheer.

Wintersong: a holiday tradition

The Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT) brings NextSteps a show to remember year after year. They will be gracing our stage this week with WinterSong – dances for a sacred season — now in it’s 26 year. Canada’s finest dancers, musicians and choreographers will grace our stage once again and present a holiday show that’s perfect for the whole family.

What is a DJ if he can’t Skratch?

DJ Skate Nights launches this week with one of Canada’s most in-demand DJs, and respected producers, Skratch Bastid. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia — home to notable hip-hop figures like Classified, Buck 65 and Ghettosocks — Skratch, Paul Murphy, started DJing in the nineties and was competing in major competitions not long after. He was also the first Canadian DJ ever to be nominated for the Juno Award for Producer of the Year in 2008.

Programmer Sergio Elmir warms up the rink

Last week, we officially announced our 2013/2014 DJ Skate Nights season. As you can imagine, excitement here at Harbourfront Centre was running high with the addition of exciting DJs like Starting From Scratch, Skratch Bastid and the Footprints DJ collective to the programme, and of course, the return of Soca On Ice.

We caught up with Sergio Elmir, the programmer responsible for curating this year’s line-up of turntable bullies, who shared his excitement — and a few impressive moves.

Paradise Lost: transforming the mysteries of a great literary work into dance

Acclaimed dancer/choreographer Janak Khendry, has been devoted to dance for more than forty five years. With an extensive background in Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Manipuri styles — studied under the most important teachers of the twentieth century –he strives to further human understanding through dance, music, art and culture. This is all done under the umbrella of Janak Khendry Dance Company.

Lacing up a pair of skates and gliding across a freshly re-surfaced ice rink is a Canadian rite of passage. The distinct sound of blades carving into the ice, the flurry of toques, scarves and mitts, the rich aroma of hot chocolate wafting through the air – the essence of winter. Ballet Creole: Thirteen years of soulful celebration

Next week Ballet Creole’s Soulful Messiah returns for it’s thirteenth season. Choreographed by Trinidadian-born artistic director, Patrick Parson, Soulful Messiah was originally conceived to add to the holiday celebration within the city of Toronto, alongside other shows such as The Nutcracker. It was based upon a CD, Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, which Parson first listened to over 15 years ago.
