DJ Skate Nights launches this week with one of Canada’s most in-demand DJs, and respected producers, Skratch Bastid. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia — home to notable hip-hop figures like Classified, Buck 65 and Ghettosocks — Skratch Bastid, Paul Murphy, started DJing in the nineties and was competing in major competitions not long after. He was also the first Canadian DJ ever to be nominated for the Juno Award for Producer of the Year in 2008.
After getting his chops on the battle circuit competing in both ITF (International turntablist Federation) and DMC competitions , he won his first title at the 2003 Scribble Jam. The now defunct festival that took place annually in Ohio, and was dubbed America’s largest hip hop festival, would crown him two more time in his career. His production work can be heard on the Juno nominated project Situation by abstract rapper, and host of Radio 2 Drive on CBC Radio 2, Buck 65 — Skratch Bastid produced all but three tracks on the album. He also produced two (and co-produced two more) songs on Shad’s latest project Flying Colours. All this aside, he has released numerous other mixtapes/projects, which showcase his insane routines, and is constantly touring. To put it short, he’s working.
From his annual BBQ here in Toronto, to working with internationally renowned artists, Skratch Bastid– who DJ Jazzy Jeff describes as the most “well rounded DJ he knows” — is guaranteed to take DJ Skate Nights to a whole new level of awesome this weekend. Join us as we kick off what we think will be our best season yet.
See you on the ice.
