Shane McNutt is a Toronto-based ceramic artist, and an artist-in-residence at Harbourfront Centre. You might have seen Shane’s work if you’ve ever strolled by the windows outside of the Craft & Design Studio, or walked through the warm, open-air space inside where the public can watch artists do their thing. Shane is inspired by some pretty iconic motifs drawn from video games! Over the last few years, the OCAD University graduate has focused on thrown porcelain domestic objects, thick slip decoration and carved surfaces, but his pieces have evolved to thick slab-built earthenware wall plates and domestic objects featuring motifs inspired by the world of Mario and Luigi: “Pixel Ware,” and “Koopa Family Portrait Series.” He has been active in the Craft & Design Studio at Harbourfront Centre since September 2013, working alongside other artists.
Shane’s work is part of the Creative Genius line of home and personal accessories that is curated, produced and distributed by Harbourfront Centre. We met with Shane to talk about his time at Harbourfront Centre, and get his thoughts on the Creative Genius program.
