This year, Harbourfront Centre presents the fifth edition of the SoundClash Music Awards. To mark the occasion, we’ve given the idea of “letting the city hear your sound” a fresh new take. For this year’s competition, the five finalists will all perform at July’s Party on the Block, a brand-new weekend festival celebrating diverse street cultures from around the world.
Hundreds of Toronto-area artists across all genres, from folk and rock to hip-hop and world fusion, have already submitted their music online. A combination of juried and public voting will determine the select group of finalists to take the stage at Party on the Block. The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize ($3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third) along with other prizes such as vocal coaching, airfare vouchers, and a headlining time slot on the Harbourfront Centre WestJet Stage during the Hot & Spicy Food Festival in September. Past SoundClash Music Awards winners include Maneli Jamal, Brendan Philip, Chloe Charles and Saidah Baba Talibah.
“The SoundClash Music Award was created with the intention of offering a music competition that reflected the incredible diversity of sounds and influences we hear at Harbourfront Centre and all across the city,” says Melanie Fernandez, Harbourfront Centre Director of Community Events and Activation. “It’s much more stylistically inclusive than Battles of the Bands, which usually tend to focus on rock. It goes beyond song competitions that are as much based on social media fanbase numbers as they are artistic merit, because the shortlisting process combines input from juries and the public. And this year with its integration into Party on the Block, it truly has come full circle.”
