Get educated on School Visits

Harbourfront Centre’s School Visits programme is a full day learning experience for students from kindergarten to grade 12. Students are invited to take part in programming across the arts world and beyond, from visual arts and media studies, to performing arts and urban studies. Visiting school groups can enjoy a full-day program, or combine two half-day programmes to make up a full-day field trip.

We sat down with Carol Shelly, School Visits coordinator, to get educated on the available programmes.

What are the guiding themes for School Visits?

School Visits programmes are rooted in the inquiry-based learning approach. We firmly believe that students should be given the opportunity to explore their own creativity under the framework provided by our gifted artist-educators.

Through our theme-based interdisciplinary programmes our School Visits educators create engaging multi-disciplinary experiences. In these full-day offerings, students visit our galleries and explore a certain theme from multiple perspectives. This year, students can look forward to exploring sustainability, abstraction and transformation.

What is the Creative Edge programme?

The Creative Edge programme creates an opportunity for students to participate in special events hosted by Harbourfront Centre. Students see a performance or reading and then take part in a workshop with local, national and international artists in contemporary performing, literary or visual arts.

These programmes supplement our full-year offerings and run for specific time frame. They also tend to book quickly.

What can we look forward to from the upcoming Day of the Dead Creative Edge program? Can you give us a sneak peek at what’s coming after that?

This year for Day of the Dead we are honoured to have Tiburcio Stoteno join us from Metepec Mexico for the weekend celebrations. Tiburcio will be participating in a clay skulls workshop and working alongside our students on Friday, November 6.

Next on our line up we’ve partnered with the Toronto Dance Theatre to present Echo. School Visits students will view Harbourfront Centre galleries through a dancer’s perspective, participate in a dance workshop and take in a performance.

Still to come this year, we have our Lunar New Year, Kuumba celebrations and DanceWorks’ Company 605 – Vital Few.
