For three seasons we’ve been giving some of the hottest up and coming Toronto talent the opportunity to grace our stages to clash for cash and other prizes. For a fourth season we’re once again calling on (unsigned) G.T.A. music artists to submit music for their shot at the title of SoundClash winner, joining past shortlisted artists like Miles Jones, Rich Kidd, OPOPO, LAL, Progress, Gyles and Kids & Explosions (among others). With $10,000 in cash/prizes — and the opportunity to play a set on the WestJet stage during our annual Hot & Spicy Food Festival — on the line, we’re looking for artists who are ready to bring it.
With a core group of seven dancers and has a touring repertoire of 3 full length works, choreographed by award-winning choreographer/artist Malgorzata Nowacka, The Chimera Project has a history of not only creating pieces for the most prestigious contemporary dance events and national presenters, but also introducing a new generation of choreographers to the world through their annual Fresh Blood series. Now in it’s fifth year, Fresh Blood is giving up-an-coming choreographers (with five years of experience) the chance to join a list of talented alumni that includes acclaimed Ritmo Flamenco co-artistic director Anjelica Scannura — who is currently part of our NextSteps season — and 2013 Fresh Blood Paula Citron Dance Award winner Emilio Colalillo.
Zack Werner’s Idol School is taking the stage during the HarbourKIDS: Thanksgiving festival this Monday. Zack, who was Canadian Idol’s answer to Simon Cowell (one of the hosts of American Idol), definitely has an eye (and ear) for talent. He not only spotted Carly Rae Jepsen (who was third place in the fifth season of Canadian Idol) and Down With Webster, but was also instrumental in the development of Esthero and The Philosopher Kings (just to name a few).
At this year’s Hot & Spicy Food Festival, we’ll be hosting not one, but two food competitions! Returning for its second year, Taco Takedown will take place on Saturday, August 31st, while Donut Holed-Up will follow the day after. Both events take place in Zone 5 from 6:30PM to 9:00PM.
An empanada is baked or fried bread with stuffing. Visually, it looks like a pizza pocket; however, it usually contains a combination of meat, vegetables, cheese, and fruit. Sounds good, eh? But it gets better! Harbourfront Centre will be hosting a competition to determine who makes the best empanada! We’ll be featuring chefs Lizka Silvera; Natalia Martinez Cristian Heise; Martha Martinez; Kevin Chica-vera and Luis Manuel Cordoba.
