APPLICATION PROCESS SUMMARY

Applications for 2017 are now closed.

Application for 2018 are due on Friday, March 9, 2018 @ 5pm Toronto local time.

Applications are a two-step process: online application followed by an interview.

To confirm your eligibility, please review the criteria.

There is a $25 fee to apply for a full-time or short-term Artist-in-Residence position (applicants to the summer program do not pay a fee). This amount includes tax and is payable by credit card. You will be asked to fill in your credit card information on the application form. If you require an alternative method of payment, please contact craft@harbourfrontcentre.com prior to the deadline.

Online Application

All application forms are online.

Applications sent by mail, email, fax or any other means will not be accepted.

Please ensure that your application is complete in every way. A complete application means that the application form and both letters of recommendation are received on or before the deadline.

If any information should change on your application form, please notify us promptly.

Interview

If your online application is successful, we will contact you via email to invite you to an in-person interview with the Selection Committee. This interview will take place at Harbourfront Centre in April or May. If you require an alternate date, please email craft@harbourfrontcentre.com by February 1.

Out-of-town applicants must provide for their own accommodation and travel costs for the interview.

ONLINE APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • Applications and letters of recommendation must be received no later than 5:00pm Toronto local time on the deadline date, without exception.
  • All forms are online. We do not accept applications by mail, e-mail, or fax.
  • Please ensure that your application is complete in every way. A complete application means both letters of recommendation are received on or before the deadline.
  • Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Images

The Selection Committee will have two opportunities to view your images: first with your application submission and again when you are interviewed.

  • As part of the online application form, you will upload six images of your work.
  • Please test your images prior to uploading to ensure that they are formatted correctly.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that the images you upload are intact and in a readable format.
  • You are allowed three multiple/detail/installation shots only; the rest of the presentation must be single images.
  • When submitting images keep in mind the quality of your image is very important.
  • jpeg files only
  • Files at a resolution of 72dpi
  • Files of a maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels

Letters of Recommendation

  • It is your responsibility to contact your recommenders to ensure they have sent their letters. Please send them link to online form.
  • Letters of recommendation must be submitted using the online form. No letters by email, mail, or fax will be accepted.
  • An appropriate recommender includes a professor, supervisor or employer. Recommendations should be requested from individuals who are prepared to comment on your technical and conceptual ability, qualifications and character.
  • Please ensure that you enter the recommender’s FULL LEGAL NAME to ensure we can match it to your application.
  • If the recommender has trouble, please inform us PRIOR to the deadline.
  • If the recommendation is submitted successfully, the recommender will receive a confirmation email.

INTERVIEW GUIDELINES

If your online application is successful, we will contact you via email to invite you to an in-person interview with the Selection Committee at Harbourfront Centre. Interview dates are always in April and May. Interviews happen during the week and not on weekends. All applicants are interviewed on the same days. This date is set by Harbourfront Centre. If you require an alternate date, please email craft@harbourfrontcentre.com by February 1.

Prior to being submitted to the Selection Committee, applications are reviewed by the Director of Craft & Design to confirm the eligibility of the applicant and program of work.

Out-of-town applicants must provide for their own accommodation and travel costs for the interview.

Interview Format:
Approximately 40 minutes in length for full-time applicants and 25 minutes for summer applicants.

  1. Set up your work – 5 minutes
  2. Image presentation – 10 minutes (10 mins for summer)
  3. Viewing of Work – 10 minutes (5 mins for summer)
  4. Question & Answer – 10 minutes (5 mins for summer)
  5. Pack up your work – 5 minutes

Applicants are required to orally present images showing the development of their work:

  • Please bring no more than 15 digital images (10 for summer applicants) showing the development of your work. These images do not have to be the same as the ones you submitted with your online application.
  • Images should be in either Powerpoint (.ppt) or PDF format on a CD or USB. Must be compatible with Mac operating system.
  • Digital material is viewed on flatscreen LCD monitors.
  • You are allowed three multiple/detail/installation shots only; the rest of the presentation must be single images.
  • Image quality is very important.
  • Files at a resolution of 72dpi
  • Files of a maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels

You must bring three to six (3-6) samples of current work, for viewing by the Selection Committee. The pieces must be complete and undamaged. Do not include complicated display systems as you only have 5 minutes to set up your work. Selection Committee members will help unpack and pack up your work if needed. Harbourfront Centre is not responsible for damage (whatever the cause) of support material.

NOTIFICATION

We will contact you via email as to the Selection Committee results.

If you are awarded a residency, please email us immediately to confirm your acceptance. If you fail to do so within 5 business days you will forfeit.

Refrain from posting results on social media networks until after you have confirmed your acceptance with Harbourfront Centre.

Please address all questions concerning the Selection Committee’s decision to Harbourfront Centre’s Director of Craft & Design only; do not direct your questions to any other member of the Selection Committee.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

International applicants please familiarize yourself with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

FEES

There is a $25 fee to apply for a full-time or short-term Artist-in-Residence position (applicants to the summer program do not pay a fee). This amount includes tax and is payable by credit card. You will be asked to fill in your credit card information on the application form. If you require an alternative method of payment, please contact craft@harbourfrontcentre.com prior to the deadline.

If you are awarded an Annual Artist-in-Residence position, you sign a one-year contract and pay a monthly license fee of $85. Some applicants may be eligible to receive a scholarship. If awarded a scholarship, you do not pay licensing fees.

Summer Artists-in-Residence do not pay licensing fees.

***Harbourfront Centre does not provide housing as part of the Artist-in-Residence program. You are responsible for all of your own living and travel costs. Artists-in-Residence do not receive stipends.***
