Sebseb Belu Cultural Group
August 12, 2017
Sebseb Belu comes from the Amharic language of Ethiopia, and means to unite, or come together. A group of young Ethiopians alongside a strong leader, Sosena Assefa, have come together to display the rich culture, traditions and beauty of their homeland Ethiopia.
Sebseb Belu was established in 2008, as a cultural dance group performing for the yearly Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash) Celebration at Christie Pitts Park. Since then they have embarked upon greater opportunities, performing for organizations including Canadian Humanitarian, Canadian Victims of Torture, Unicef, Canada Day July 1st at Dundas square, Ethiopian Football Federation in North America, opening ceremony and the Pan Am/ Parapan Games opening ceremony in 2015.
They pop their shoulders, sway their hips, and bob their necks to the instrumental melodies of their cultural music as they allure us with the colorful costumes and curly, bouncy hair.
