Moulin Rouge – WINNER!

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Ewan MacGregor and Jim Broadbent

Baz Luhrmann’s lavish musical fantasy plays out a glorious tale of love and loss in 1899 Paris, where everyone’s so brilliant they’re singing songs that haven’t even been written yet. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are ideally matched as an aspiring author and the enticing nightclub siren into whose life he is drawn; Jim Broadbent won an Oscar for his alternately fatherly and ferocious performance as the club’s ringmaster. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Directed by Baz Luhrman. Rated PG, 124 mins.

This year we celebrate movies that construct a new reality for themselves, told with an element of fantasy. We want to know which film is truly out of this world! Cast your vote for your favourite title from the list below to help determine which film is featured at our final Free Flicks screening.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwarzman and Bill Murray

Wes Anderson’s stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book constructs an entire world out of fur, cloth and stone, building a magnificently idiosyncratic universe in which talking animals – with the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray – struggle with social and financial problems just like people, while donning bandit hats and staging elaborate raids on the stores of nearby farmers. Okay, maybe they’re not like people. Maybe they’re a little more fantastic.

Directed by Wes Anderson. Rated PG, 86 mins.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Starring: Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie

Most of the movies we’re screening create their invented worlds by hand. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow generates its alternate universe digitally, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Angelina Jolie acting on empty stages and director Kerry Conran filling in the elaborate, heavily stylized Art Deco world around them with computer-generated imagery. The result, inspired by the pulp serials of the 1930s, is a visually striking, occasionally jaw-dropping cinematic experience. Also it has flying robots, which is never a bad thing.

Directed by Kerry Conran. Rated PG, 106 mins.
