Curatorial Statement
This year's Longo's Free Flicks film series explores six different cities through the eyes of the filmmaker, the characters and the audience.
The city in and of itself is a part of the structural narrative as a driving force of the plot. The city awakens and sleeps, breathes and gives life; the city envelops, drives and interacts with the protagonist.
The film series will explore the relationships between narrative play and character development with an inanimate protagonist that is arguably more animated than the most interesting of living characters.
The cities featured will be hotbeds of culture and will range from American cities that tend to permeate and saturate film culture in the mainstream, established film cities as well as emerging cities.
Established and up-and-coming directors will be featured as well as cult and mainstream films in keeping with the objective of remaining accessible to audiences, while continuing to challenge them.
