What does it mean to be Indigenous? This new work, inspired by writer Thomas King’s eponymous short film, I’m Not the Indian You Had in Mind, explores stereotypes existing within Indigenous North American and Indigenous Latin-American cultures.
There are many points of intersection where social, race, and gender stereotypes collide across cultures. It is through this intersection and collision where stereotypes and preconceived ideas of what it is to be Indigenous can be transformed.

Established in 1993, Native Women in the Arts (NWIA) is a not-for-profit organization for First Nations, Inuit and Métis women from diverse artistic disciplines who share a common interest in culture, art, community and the advancement of Indigenous peoples. NWIA produces unique artistic programming while developing, supporting and cultivating Indigenous women in the performing arts, literary arts and publishing, visual arts, and community development projects. NWIA’s influence has been felt in Indigenous, culturally diverse and mainstream communities across Canada. We nourish and transform our community by pursuing the highest standards of artistic excellence, and by offering development opportunities to emerging artists.
Carlos Rivera is of Indigenous Mixteco heritage (Mexico). He is a professional dancer, teacher and choreographer based in Toronto and México City. He trained at the Government of Mexico City’s Cultural Secretary Dance School and the Centre for Choreographic Research (CICO-INBA) at the National Fine Arts Institute. He draws from elements within traditional and popular culture in contemporary dance. His own choreographic works include: Bosque Sagrado, Jardines y Santuarios, Memorias del Fandango, and From the Aztlant of the Zocalo. His performance credits include: Caribou Son, Raven Stole the Sun, Tono, Shimmer, Dancing Americas (Red Sky) and Migration (Red Sky and Black Grace). He has been an associate artist and rehearsal director for Red Sky Performance.
