Twenty-one dancers take to the stage as Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (WCD) honours their beloved founder, Rachel Browne, by remounting nine of her signature works from 1964 through 2012. Her work has influenced generations of dancers whom she has trained and directed, and as the founding artistic director of WCD, she also gave numerous choreographers a place to develop and mount their works. Browne remained active as a choreographer, teacher and performer until her passing. She had received numerous awards, most notably the 1995 Jean A. Chalmers Award for Creativity in Dance, the 2000 Canada Council Jacqueline Lemieux Prize and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1997. Rachel Browne passed away at the age of 77 while in attendance this summer at the 2012 Canada Dance Festival. Toward Light is a loving tribute to this icon of Canadian modern dance.
