HANDYPERSON, GROUNDS & MAINTENANCE (CONTRACT) Job Ref. #08FC09B-ET

Situated on Toronto's waterfront, Harbourfront Centre is renowned as Canada's foremost facility for contemporary culture. Our year-round operation offers some 4000 internationally acclaimed events ranging from music, literary and theatrical festivals to children's activities and craft shops.
Currently, we are seeking ONE motivated and reliable individuals to join our Grounds Department. Reporting to the Site Services Manager, this position will perform preventive and general repairs on equipment and facilities.
MAJOR DUTIES: Builds stairs, tables, shelves and other structures. Maintains and repairs existing structures including carpentry and welding repairs Performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment, vehicles and structures. Performs mechanical repairs to equipment and vehicles, as required Paints new and existing structures and equipment Performs plumbing and minor electrical repairs, as required Assists ground crew by picking up litter and removing garbage. Assists landscape crew in summer, including cutting grass, trimming, etc., and performs custodial duties, as required and other duties as assigned. Assists in the setup of strikes for special events. Removes snow from Harbourfront Centre property using power equipment and shovel. Maintains ice rink, including cleaning ice with power equipment Monitors activities of part time seasonal staff assigned to this position
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENT: 1-2 years of experience in carpentry, plumbing and welding repairs. Must have a valid drivers license. Ability to operate electrical tools and equipment, tractors, snow plows and other power equipment. Some knowledge of grounds keeping. Ability to follow instructions and performs duties in a safe manner, and abides by departmental safety procedures and policies, with little or no supervision.. Ability to lift lumber, shovel snow and heavy material. Familiarity with the Occupational and Safety Act and WHMIS regulations. Flexible with scheduling and able to work evenings and weekends.
DURATION: May 2008 SEPT., 2008
HOURS: Monday to Friday, 8-4pm
WAGE: $12 - $15.00 per hour

Currently an employment opportunity exists in our Marketing Department for a full time Manager, Marketing. Reporting to the Director, Marketing & Media Relations, this position will develop marketing strategies and programmes to meet organizational objectives and to increase ticket sales and audience attendance at the Harbourfront Centre site and its programmes; drive the execution of the marketing plans and strategies; and direct the day to day activities of the staff and department.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Develops and recommends goals, objectives and strategies for the Marketing department to promote Harbourfront Centre programmes and activities and to market the 10-acre site as a destination. Functions as the driving force to ensure complete implementation and successful operation of marketing and design processes. Plans, coordinates and evaluates the activities, programmes and services of the department to ensure its effective operation. Develops programme and project marketing strategies and plans and supervises the implementations. Aggressively leads the department in the development and implementation of social media strategies as a primary marketing tool, while maintaining and utilizing traditional print and electronic media campaigns. Supervises the activities of the marketing staff responsible for the execution of the marketing plan, services and functions of the department Works closely with the Director of Marketing and Media Relations and meets with various department representatives to discuss issues of mutual concern, coordinate efforts, develop action plans and/or marketing advice. Manages working relationships with Design Communications, Marketing Promotions, Sponsorship and Fundraising departments to successfully integrate their needs and processes in all Marketing implementations. Develops and manages the Marketing department budgets. Measures results and evaluates the effectiveness of the marketing plan for each programme and project upon completion. Keeps current on marketing trends and tactics. Liaises with Marketing departments of local cultural organizations as well as national and international organizations of a similar nature.
The ideal candidate will have a post secondary degree in marketing and 5-7 years experience in progressively responsible positions. The incumbent must be a creative thinker with problem solving skills and constant desire to improve existing processes or develop new ones. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are required to deal collaboratively with a wide variety of people and diverse communities. He/she must have strong project management and organizational skills with ability to multi-task and manage multiple deadlines. Extensive experience working with print, electronic and ethno-culturally diverse media, and a sound understanding of web-based marketing campaigns and social media outlets are required. He/she must have previous supervisory experience with the ability to develop, motivate and inspire staff. An understanding of not-for-profit cultural and community-based organizations will be an asset.

Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, this position is responsible for cleaning buildings on a daily basis, performing setup of events and monitoring cleanliness of buildings during events.
MAJOR DUTIES: Clean buildings and grounds including mopping, emptying garbage, dusting, removing snow and scooping, etc. Assemble/dismantle setups and strikes including tables, chairs, stages, kitchen equipment, etc as required. Maintain Harbourfront Centre equipment (e.g., tables, chairs, vacuums, sign boards, etc Respond to requests from Harbourfront Centre employees and the public and provide assistance as required. Check buildings, monitor heating and lighting systems for damage or malfunction and report problems to the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to operate equipment used for cleaning and snow removal, e.g., snow blower, radio, vacuum, etc is required. Personable and polite (courteous with staff and the public) Professional work ethic and be able to work without supervision Available to work varying shifts: day, evening shifts and weekends WHMIS training is desirable

Currently an employment opportunity exists in our Site Operations & Services Department for a PAINTER. This is primarily an outdoor position.
MAJOR DUTIES: Reporting to the Manager, Site Services, the individual will be responsible for all activities related to the painting of surfaces at Harbourfront Centre facilities and performs other site maintenance duties, snow removal duties, as assigned, in a safe manner and abides by departmental safety procedures and policies.
Prepares surfaces to be painted by cleaning, scraping, sanding and repairing holes, damage, etc., paints surfaces. Cleans and maintains painting equipment.
Maintains paint supply, equipment and reorders when necessary
Performs other site maintenance duties, as assigned: ie, -Shovels snow from stairs, sidewalks, etc., as required -Assists Handyperson or performs Handyperson duties, as required - Performs custodial duties as required. - Assists with event set up and strikes, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENT: Job requires a high school diploma Job requires knowledge of a variety of paints and painting tools. Job requires varied experience in painting a variety of surfaces. Job requires a valid drivers licence Job requires standing for extended periods, ongoing lifting of paint cans and tools, bending and occasionally working in awkward positions. Job involves concentration when painting. Job involves exposure to paint fumes and paint related chemicals and working in isolation and some hazardous situations when painting high surfaces. Work environment is primarily outdoors and involve some shift work and overtime work.

The Team Leader will participate in and supervise a team of 5 people in proactively welcoming visitors to Harbourfront Centre, providing them with information about the site, its offerings and activities in an engaging, informative, positive and professional manner. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Supervise the Site Summer Hosts to ensure that job duties are being properly performed - Monitor site traffic and if necessary make changes to ensure best possible area coverage. - Consult with the Information Desk staff on a regular basis, ensuring any changes to daily events are communicated properly and timely to the site summer hosts. - Collect feedback from site summer hosts and compile a weekly report for distribution to Site Summer Host Project team. - Assign locations, schedule and provide proper break coverage for the Site Summer Hosts. - Act as an escalation point for Site Summer Hosts. - Proactively engage in welcoming visitors, offering information and promoting Harbourfront Centre by suggesting activities or site offerings.
