WE’LL BRING SCHOOL VISITS TO YOU!

You and your students can now experience the creative world of Harbourfront Centre at your own school! All of our wonderful programmes are curriculum-linked and offer students authentic learning experiences across the arts.

There are a variety of programmes available as outreach sessions. The Performing Arts programming include Let’s Slam! Spoken Word Performance Art, Choreography, Urban Dance and Understanding Hip Hop. For the younger students we are also offering Primary Understanding Hip Hop or Creative Movement. The Visual Arts & Contemporary Craft programming includes Paper Masks, Lino Print, Collagraph Printmaking. For younger students we offer Young Collagraph Printmaking, Shadow Puppets and Rod Puppets, and Accordion Books.

The cost for a full-day programme (3-3.5 hours) is $14 per student with a 20-student minimum. The cost of transportation for our educator and supplies is extra. For more information contact the School Visits Registrar at 416-973-4091 or registrar@harbourfrontcentre.com.

The Power Plant
Christian Marclay: The Clock
22 September – 25 November 2012
Grades 4-8

Around the world, people have lined up day and night to experience American artist Christian Marclay’s The Clock. Unique and compelling, The Clock is an ode to time and the cinema comprised of thousands of fragments from a vast range of films. Short clips featuring wristwatches, alarm clocks, countdowns and other references to time and timepieces are edited together into a captivating illustration of virtually every minute of a day. The end result is an epic 24-hour video that plunges visitors into hundreds of different cinematic settings and moods, making time unravel in countless directions. Marclay’s experimental work with sound, video and film has been extremely influential on a younger generation of artists working with sampling.

An integral part of the International Festival of Authors (IFOA) for the past eight years, YoungIFOA was born as a way to include a younger generation of readers in a festival of international repute.

What makes a good chair or even a toothbrush? The answer is the design. Students investigate the design and architecture exhibitions at Harbourfront Centre using them as inspiration to design an original product or environment. In Autumn 2012, the theme will be “Contemporary French Design.”

A great opportunity for students to watch a professional dance performance, talk to the performers and take a supplementary workshop. This year’s dance companies include:

Marimekko is a Finnish design firm with significant global influence in printed textiles. Celebrate international design with a visit to the TMC to see an exhibition offering a retrospective look at Marimekko’s origins and the role of the textile and clothing company in contemporary decorative arts, design and culture. The other half of the day will be at Harbourfront Centre, where students create a printed textile inspired by the patterns in the exhibition.

Lunar Fest: Year of the Snake

Help us celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year. There will be a shadow puppet show, lunar games and an exhibit of totem lanterns.

NOVEMBER 2011

Education Resource Kits

Every School Visits programme includes a comprehensive Education Resource Kit prepared by Harbourfront Centre School Visits educators. Our aim is to provide a useful resource beyond the life of the programme and to support varied classroom projects. The Education Resource Kit is ideal for cross-curricular work, touching on issues in language, literacy, social studies and humanities as well as art. Introductions to each section are grouped together, explaining the themes we have chosen to highlight in that area. Kits include both pre- and post-visit activities, in hopes that teachers will prepare students for their Harbourfront Centre experience, and follow up in the classroom afterward to get the most out of their visit to Harbourfront Centre.

AUGUST 2011

New and Continuing Partnerships

Launching this year is a new partnership with the Textile Museum of Canada. With our new Lino Printmaking with Textile Museum of Canada Tour, your class can celebrate Islamic History Month with a visit to the Textile Museum of Canada to see the exhibition Magic Squares: The Patterned Imagination of Muslim Africa in Contemporary Culture. Then, head down to Harbourfront Centre where students will learn the techniques of relief printing using a soft linoleum block and create a printed textile inspired by the patterns in the exhibition.

The Textile Museum of Canada is “one of Toronto’s most engaging visual arts organizations. With more than 12,000 objects from more than 200 countries and regions, the TMC’s permanent collection celebrates cultural diversity and includes traditional fabrics, garments, carpets and related artifacts such as beadwork and basketry.”

Lino Printmaking with Textile Museum of Canada Tour is intended for students in Grades 4-12 and will cost $14/student. This unique opportunity is only available from November 1-4, 2011 inclusive to coincide with Islamic History Month. Speak with our Registrar for more information, or visit textilemuseum.ca for additional information on the museum itself.

We are also continuing our partnership with the Museum of Inuit Art (MIA). The Museum of Inuit Art is “southern Canada’s only public museum devoted exclusively to one of Canada’s most celebrated artistic achievements: Inuit art.” When booking our Young Collograph or Lino Print making programmes, the full-day option includes the opportunity for students to enjoy a guided tour of the museum and draw on these connections in their own work. New instructors for Performing Arts

In coordination with the launch of Let’s Slam! Spoken Word Poetry and Theatre for Change, Harbourfront Centre is happy to announce our newest instructors: Nicola Correia-Damude and Paulina O’Kieffe!

About Nicola Correia–Damude:
Nicola Correia–Damude is a Toronto-born actor, singer and educator. A graduate of Studio 58 and the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical theatre training at the Stratford  Festival of Canada, Nicola has performed at the Shaw Festival of Canada, the  Stratford Festival of Canada, Canadian Stage, Factory Theatre, Bard on the Beach and at The Caravan Farm Theatre. Nicola has her Artist in Education Certification from York University, The Stratford Festival of Canada and The Ontario Arts Council and was a delegate in the 2011 Canadian Stage Artist Educator Training Intensive.

About Paulina O’Kieffe:
Paulina O’Kieffe is a Toronto entrepreneur, spoken word artist, community worker, program facilitator and youth activist who has been working and performing across Toronto for the last six years. The former coordinator of R.H.Y.M.E. poetry collective (Revolutionaries Honoring Your Mind’s Eye) Paulina is influenced by her diverse descent and her work in multiple communities.  Her poetry, which covers a diverse range of topics from love to revolution, appears in print in Guerillas of the Word and If I Ran the School. Her performances include competing in the Toronto International Poetry Slam in 2007 and more recently performing at the opening for the RUKUS: Anti Racism Anti Oppression Conference for youth held at York University last year. Paulina has been using spoken word to teach young people in a number of communities about self education, expression and empowerment for the last six years. We welcome both artists to our team!

Artist-in-Residence 2012

The AiR 2012 project contracts an acclaimed professional artist to provide an intensive experience as an extension of the arts curriculum. The residency takes place over three full day sessions and emphasizes skills to transfer the arts curriculum into an arts career. Stay tuned for our artist announcement!

Planet IndigenUs Workshops

Planet IndigenUs is pleased to announce five educational workshops for Aboriginal communities in the GTA. The 2011 Planet IndigenUs workshops include Marketing and Media: More with Le$$, Sponsorship and Fundraising, Outreach, Event Planning, and Grant Writing.

Further details on the workshops will be announced soon.

Last year, Planet IndigenUs was honoured and excited to share educational workshops with Aboriginal communities such as Wahta, Tyendinaga, Six Nations and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto. The workshop presenters included Harbourfront Centre’s Averill Maroun, manager of marketing promotions, tourism and community outreach; Riley Wallace, social media coordinator; and Lisa Odjig, programme associate. The presenting guest was Santee Smith, Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan, and artistic director/choreographer for Kaha:wi Dance Theatre from Six Nations Reserve, Ont.

Artist-in-Residency Programme

The Artist-in-Residency (AIR) programme is a continuing programme within the School Visits department. This March, School Visits is excited to offer students the opportunity to work with critically acclaimed professional dancer and choreographer Santee Smith of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre.

Santee holds a master’s degree in dance from York University and has spent much of her life committed to dance and creative expression. She has also attended the National Ballet School and McMaster University. She has created, produced and toured her work both nationally and internationally. Santee has extensive guest teaching experience having taught at Brock University, York University and Trent University amongst others in addition to facilitating numerous dance workshops.

This year, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board’s Clarington Central Secondary School is excited to be a part of the AIR project. Sheelah Brower, teacher for Grade 11 and 12 dance, will bring between 25-35 students. Santee will offer the students first-hand experiences sharing her knowledge as a professional dancer. Santee will help to guide the students through the process of workshopping and completing a dance piece. Students will gain valuable insight into the process of dance as a profession, increase their dance vocabulary as well as learn dance technique from a unique aboriginal framework. The School Visits department of Community and Educational Programming (CEP) here at Harbourfront Centre, as well as Clarington Secondary School’s Sheelah Brower, is excited about this educationally enriching opportunity.

Right Here Video Project

Greetings educators:

It is my pleasure and privilege to share the Right Here video project with you. This extraordinary project, which occurred as part of the Planet IndigenUs festival, was hosted by Harbourfront Centre and the Woodland Cultural Centre in August 2009.

Planet IndigenUs is the largest contemporary, multidisciplinary Indigenous festival in the world. Over 300 Indigenous artists from over 20 countries gathered together to present remarkable arts and cultural works.

The youth that participated in the Right Here project created videos that spoke to their experiences growing up in a world filled with many challenges. They reflect, often humourously, on ideas and issues that touch their lives.

You can all follow the project through the final videos which are posted below. You can also undertake a similar project in your schools and communities by downloading the resource document found here.

We hope you enjoy the project; keep updated on future Planet IndigenUs activities through our Facebook page or through our Planet IndigenUs newsletter; and we hope that you will participate in future projects.

School Visits 2010-11 features a variety of new and exciting additions to the curriculum, including arts-based programming like the following:

NEW! Textile Arts
Grades: 2–4 “Family Portraits” (half day)
Grades: 5–8 “Social Awareness” (full day)

Textile arts often bring together communities and encourage collaboration. Your students discuss contemporary and traditional textile works that have encouraged social change and awareness. Using recycled fabrics, collage and fibre arts techniques, students create a collaborative piece based on their vision of a hopeful, healthy and inclusive world community. Click here to register.

Grades: 4–8 (full day)

In this exciting new workshop, your students examine a selection of contemporary and historic still life paintings to gain an understanding of how artists explore form, space, texture, colour and light. Urban Studies Overview

Government Explorations
Grade 5 (full day)

This exciting and popular programme exposes your students to the Grade 5 government curriculum in a truly enriching way. Your students are given the opportunity to discuss the three levels of government inside Toronto’s City Hall. The students engage in a question and answer period with a judge where they learn about the decision-making process and the Canadian Criminal Code. Click here to register.

Opening of the Sherbourne Common

Sherbourne Common

Our School Visits year started off with the Grade 9 and 12 students from Earl Haig Secondary School participating in the opening ceremony of Sherbourne Common on September 24, 2010. This unique event was headed by Waterfront Toronto who invited students from our Waterfront Revitalization programme to participate. The students witnessed the unveiling of a new waterfront park in Toronto’s East Bayfront community which included a talk by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

The park is the first in Canada to incorporate storm water treatment for an entire neighbourhood into its design. The students experienced a tour of the park, lead by Waterfront Toronto and the park’s landscape architect; they were able to ask questions about its innovative design and environmental purposes. They also toured the underground storm water pipes and discussed the UV facility with the engineer. The students left full of enthusiasm and were thrilled to learn about Toronto’s newest and innovative public park.
