A vessel is more than a container. Students will be challenged to design and create a vessel while considering how its’ function influences form.

Explore the history of ceramic art across cultures! Students will visit the Craft and Design Studio to see contemporary ceramic artists at work. Our hands-on, inquiry based clay program will allow your students to gain an in-depth understanding of the properties of clay, use hand building techniques and encourage individual expression in the creation of a sculptural piece.

Key Inquiry Question: How can the relationship between form and function influence the creation of your sculpture?

Program Objectives

By the end of any clay program, students will:

  • Use appropriate terminology related to ceramic arts
  • Assess historic and current examples of the chosen project
  • Demonstrate an ability to construct a clay beast, mask, portrait or vessel using hand building techniques
