Understanding Hip Hop

Grades: 4-12 (Full Day)

In this full day program, students gain an in-depth understanding of the elements of hip-hop: DJing, rapping, graffiti art and dancing. Students will explore the roots of hip hop as well as the contemporary impact of hip hop culture today. They will explore how hip hop can be used as a tool for self-expression.

Please note that this program is not exclusively a dance program.

Program Objectives
By the end of the Hip Hop program, students will:

  • Explore the origins and growth of Hip Hop culture
  • Describe how a culture expresses its identity through the arts (e.g., through drawing, song, dance, drama, symbolism and traditions)
  • Apply the elements of dance (body, space, time, energy and relationships) to create a collaborative piece
