Students discover why artists today are inspired by the outdoors. Investigate a range of landscape based works, contemporary and historical, while discussing the importance of the power of place and the purpose of making art.

• Engage in outdoor sketching activities inspired by Lake Ontario and the waterfront community outside our studio windows
• Learn a range of landscape painting techniques: discover colour and its application, the importance of tonal values in a work, and elements and principals of design

Rediscover texture through the art of collograph: design, create, produce a series of coloured prints.

• Learn about Picasso and Braque's contributions to the evolution of printmaking
in the 20th century
• Learn how contemporary artists use materials today to create collograph
• Create a collage plate using a variety of low relief textures and materials, exploring texture and form
• Learn about this history of printmaking

Contemporary Clay Vessels

Full day studio workshop!
Explore the world of contemporary ceramic clay vessels: students visit the Craft Department’s Ceramic Studio for an inside look at what's being produced right here at Harbourfront Centre, then design and create etched surface clay vessels.

• Learn hand-building techniques
• Draw inspiration from traditional and contemporary hieroglyphs and other cultural iconography

Lino Printmaking

Discover the beauty of contemporary Inuit printmaking with a trip to the Inuit Museum of Art in the Queens Quay Terminal, then, in the studio component, students make their own print inspired by their trip

• Learn the printmaking tools and techniques to design, carve and print a small series of
lino-block prints on canvas
• Discuss notions of self and community and its relation to Inuit Art. Students will then
reflect on these themes in developing the content of their own printmaking piece

Full day option: pair this programme with a reading at YoungIFOA or ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers

Discover the rich art of books and contemporary bookmaking; learn and use vocabulary specific
to the books arts.
• Use contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object
• Design, construct, and decorate your own hand-made artist book
• Discuss the importance of journaling, sketching or writing
