Theatre PANIK's The Corpse Bride

August 30-September 2, 2012

Theatre

A young groom on the way to his bride’s village accidentally weds himself to a Corpse Bride in this darkly comedic spin on shtetl folklore. Based a classic folktale by famous medieval scholar Rabbi Luria, The Corpse Bride is full of eerie theatrical images and colourful characters.  In a corner of 19th century Eastern Europe, in a time when all the Jewish brides have mysteriously disappeared, Gumpcha and Pinkel are about to be married.  But not if either one has anything to say about it… Theatre PANIK’s highly original production combines physical theatre with a stunning original musical score by John Gzowski.  Paying tribute to Yiddish theatrical tradition, silent film and cabaret through live music, stylized movement and projections, The Corpse Bride features a wonderful cast of 14 actors, including former prima ballerina Evelyn Hart. An irreverent, 21st-century tour de force of new Jewish theatre.
