The drum – the ancient heartbeat of all music – is used in virtually all forms of music played today. Its ancestral lineage includes the Afro-Cuban conga, the djembe from Guinea, bongos and the ashiko from Ghana. Trinidad-born Muhtadi, founder of Toronto’s popular Muhtadi International Drumming Festival, introduces you to the originating drum beats and riddims from various regions and countries in this interactive, performative workshop featuring Caribbean rhythms and their lineage from around the world.
