The 2013 edition marks the 16th anniversary of the Hot & Spicy Food Festival. One of our most popular festivals of the summer season, it showcases hot and spicy foods, food issues, music, dance and cultures from around the world, as well as the 10th anniversary of the always entertaining international Iron Chef Competition.
Under the summer curatorial focus of terrain, the festival will explore all things hot, spicy, rustic and urbane. Our rustic theme will allow us to explore foods and artistic practices that have connotations of being stripped down and from the country, while the urbane allows us to explore all things refined, polished and urban. Hot and spicy themes allow us to continue to examine hot, trending, provocative and of course spicy foods and artistic practices.
Terrain also provides an avenue to look at similar food variations by region, as well as the idea of contested terrains, whereby standards and/or issues are questioned and debated. The festival enhances the audience's appreciation of foods from a wide range of cultures, and provides an accessible entry point for participating in and understanding Toronto's diverse cultural landscape.
