Barbara Croall Acclaimed Odawa First Nation composer and musician Barbara Croall has been active internationally from the start of her career in 1995; her work has been premiered in several European countries, the UK, the United States, Asia, and Latin America. From 1998 to 2000 she was Resident Composer with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra working with Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Her works have been premiered and given repeat performances by major orchestras across Canada and the US, and she has been a guest soloist with orchestras performing in her own works in Canada, the USA, Mexico, across Europe, and in the UK. Rigourously trained in the classical new music tradition - she holds degrees and diplomas from Centre Acanthes (France), the Musikhochschule in Munich (Germany), The Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), and the University of Toronto where she was the recipient of the Glenn Gould Award in Composition (1989) - Croall now balances her time between composing, work in outdoor environmental educational rooted in traditional Anishinaabe teachings, work with Indigenous at-risk youth, creating and performing music on the pipigwan (Anishinaabe cedar flute) and voice in the traditional Anishinaabe way, and taking part in traditional ceremonies with Elders in her community.

Our Canada Day concert brings together Odawa First Nations composer Barbara Croall and the Syrian-Canadian ensemble Jawa (Rahaf Alakbani, voice, and Esmaeel Aboufakher, bozuq).

Croall will perform her 2008 Lullaby for pipigwan (traditional Anishinaabe cedar flute) and voice, dedicated to the many Indigenous mothers whose children died at residential schools.
