Masterclass with Dalisa Pigram and Rachael Swain

Marrugeku’s Cut The Sky

The Masterclass is for dancers and physical theatre performers who come from a range of disciplines, and who are interested in drawing on stories, memories and culture to create contemporary dance through improvisational processes. We will experiment with techniques to layer and structure movement, ideas, characters and cultural influences. Workshops will draw from the processes Marrugeku used to create Cut The Sky as well as the skills of the multi-talented cast and creative team.

As part of TORQUE, Harbourfront Centre presents the Canadian premiere of Marrugeku’s Cut The Sky on November 23–24, 2018 in the Fleck Dance Theatre.

Skill Level

Participants should have two to three years of experience in one or more of dance, circus or street forms like parkour or hip hop, traditional or contemporary Indigenous dance, martial arts or other movement based practices.

Dress so you can move freely and have appropriate foot wear or bare feet.

Dalisa Pigram was born and raised in Broome, north western Australia. Her family is part of the Yawuru people of Broome and the Bardi people of the Dampier Peninsular in the Kimberley region of W.A. Dalisa is a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of Marrugeku. She has been a co-devising performer on all productions with the company, touring around Australia and the world with shows Mimi, Crying Baby, Burning Daylight (for which she co conceived and was also assistant choreographer and cultural liaison) and Buru (which she conceived, choreographed and co-directed). Dalisa is a qualified Yawuru language teacher and teaches in schools in her community. She has co curated Marrugeku’s trilogy of International Indigenous Cultural Laboratories.

Rachael Swain is a founder and Co-Artistic Director of Marrugeku. She has pioneered challenging new approaches to Australian intercultural and interdisciplinary theatre drawing on devised processes, experimental dance and multi-media practices. She has worked closely with many Indigenous and non-indigenous artists to create distinctive contemporary cross cultural productions for Marrugeku, including directing Marrugeku’s productions Mimi, Crying Baby, Burning Daylight, Buru and Cut the Sky. All her works have toured extensively nationally and internationally. She has co-curated Marrgeku’s four International Indigenous Cultural Laboratories and Stalker’s Dance Dramaturgy Laboratories.
