Gather is a scanned archive of decaying balloon clusters found on the beaches of Toronto Island. These tokens are witness to celebrations — social gatherings of families and friends. The clusters and individual balloons marked a symbolic life passage that is now only a memory. Perhaps the original balloons, full of air, are celebrated in some other family photo album. What remains in the landscape are the broken, sand-encrusted balloons, ribbons and other debris — the forgotten detrius of social occasions reborn in the digital world. This work also reflects on the way early botanical specimens and social artifacts were collected and documented. Gather is a contemporary take on the Cabinet of Curiosities.
