The convergence of making and thinking is a constant in the Craft & Design Studio at Harbourfront Centre. For our artists and designers method and meaning are not disparate; connections are made with the past and present and with an eye to the future. They’re exploring ideas of technology, identity and history; engaging with time-honoured materials and process to respond to the world around and within them. This exhibition introduces a selection of new Artists-in-Residence at Harbourfront Centre.

Clay is imbued with a deep, primordial history. When used as a material for making, it connects us to our earliest, ancestral past. At museums and exhibitions, we look through display cases at ceramic statues, vessels and pottery shards for insights into our humanity. We gaze at specimens (living and replicated) in artificial, institutional settings. Interested in this “voyeurism” of objects and the intrinsic narratives of material, these works utilize clay in discussion of the potentially infinite, unfolding network of time.
– Kaley Flowers
Kaley Flowers is a Toronto-based artist who creates functional and non-functional ceramic sculpture. A graduate of OCAD U, she is influenced by digital culture and online fashion, web nostalgia, and the social impacts of the Internet. She explores her ideas through a mythology of characters and “cyber artifacts,” creating work that looks deeper into our relationships with technology and the objects around us.
Flowers was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Ceramics) at Harbourfront Centre in 2017.
My work in glass combines my interests in architectural design, pattern and optical art to create interactive vessels and sculptural forms that maximize on the unique material properties of glass to generate captivating visual and perceptive experiences. I utilize a variety of hot and cold glass techniques in the creation of my work, finding a certain meditative solace in the methodical and meticulous nature of each step of my process. My work additionally engages with the historical use of glass as an optical material while simultaneously subverting the traditional function of the vessel form. My aim is to create sculptural glass objects that invite interaction and investigation in a contemporary format, revealing subtle visual phenomena unique to glass.
– Jared Last
Jared Last is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and has been working in glass since 2011. He recently completed his BFA with distinction in Glass at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2016. Last has also had the opportunity to study internationally after receiving scholarships to attend classes at both the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and at Pilchuck Glass School, in Stanwood, Washington. His work has been recognized by both the Glass Art Association of Canada, as well as by members of the international Glass Art Society.
Last was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Glass) at Harbourfront Centre in 2017.
This series is a reconciliation of identity and self worth. Physically it is representative of my time spent in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia as well as time spent meticulously maintaining and preserving my hair. It was during this time that I realized how incredibly attached and dependent I had become on my hair as a source of identity, self worth, and individuality. Especially in a place of strangers and solitude, I turned to my hair as clutch and anchor.
I had become obsessed with self preservation; physically through the collection of hair as well as socially. With these pieces I find presence, I remind myself that I am real and that I could leave marks and be physical in space even when I spent my time dreaming of intangible places of home and belonging.

denirée isabel is an emerging Venezuelan-Canadian artist, working primarily in textiles. Often in the form of repeat, woven, and embroidered structures. Her work often incorporates new media, by the way of projections, animation, and audio. Her artistic practice revolves around the study and exploration of identity, culture, and womanhood.
denirée is an alumna of the NSCAD Lunenburg arts residency. She holds a BFA in Textiles with a minor in Art History from NSCADU, as well as an advanced degree from Sheridan College, Craft and Design – Textiles department.
denirée isabel was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Textiles) at Harbourfront Centre in 2017.
These works focus on the inherent allure of jewellery objects and the intimacy of touch. Made of lamp-worked glass and carved acrylic respectively, they are united by themes of curiosity and desire. Inspired by microcosms, private worlds, stone, and luscious fruit, each neckpiece is intended to attract the eye and beckon the hand ever closer.
– Emma Piirtoniemi
Endlessly intrigued and challenged, as a contemporary jeweller, Emma Piirtoniemi recognizes the incredible potential of art jewellery to convey big ideas on an intimate scale.
Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Piirtoniemi completed her BFA Major in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing and Minor in Art History at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She was a finalist in the 2016 L.A. Pai National Jewellery Student Competition in Ottawa and exhibited at SOFA Chicago 2016.
Piirtoniemi works in acrylic, glass and metal. Her work is about allure, intimacy, and private worlds with a focus on creating wearable contemplative objects.
Piirtoniemi was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Metal) at Harbourfront Centre in 2017.
