About the choreographer:
Montreal-based choreographer Sylvain Émard is widely recognized as one of the most important choreographers on the Canadian dance scene today. A creator in full command of his talent, his repertoire of more than 20 unique pieces has won the admiration of audiences at home and abroad. A recipient of the Jean A. Chalmers Award for Creativity and Excellence in the Arts (1996), Émard is the President and Founding Member of Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique in Montreal. In 2005, he joined forces with Robert Lepage to premiere the opera 1984 by Lorin Maazel, at the prestigious Covent Garden in London, and directed the reprise of this celebrated opera at La Scala in Milan (2008), and Valencia, Spain (2011).

ONE NIGHT ONLY!
The first part of a diptych that places the dancer at the very heart of creation, Fragments – Volume I is a collage of miniatures – a veritable patchwork of insistent urgency. In three solos and a duo, Sylvain Émard has crafted roles that are adapted to dancers’ most pressing needs, establishing four contrasting worlds where the depth and authenticity of gesture convey the complexity and vulnerability of the individual. Intense and often surprising, the veteran actress Monique Miller slips majestically into this new work where her minimalist movement is touchingly eloquent, offering a troubling counterpoint to the raw energy of the three exceptional dancers.
A Sylvain Émard Danse and Canada Dance Festival co-production, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut.
"As a choreographer, Émard never disappoints, and his latest piece Fragments – Volume I is a masterpiece." − Paula Citron
