About Jeng Yi:

Jeng Yi is a Korean drum and dance ensemble that performs an exciting repertoire of original compositions, dance works and traditional pieces. The members of the ensemble perform primarily on four percussion instruments: two types of leather drums and two types of metal gongs. The members of Jeng Yi are also dancers, and perform in the much-talked-about piece Pyong, in which each member dances while spinning a ribboned hat called the Sangmo. Formed in 1998, Jeng Yi has produced and presented several full-length concerts. The ensemble has toured extensively, and has been invited to and performed at the Eastman School of Music, The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Sunfest, The Algoma Fall Festival, The Music Garden, The Toronto Art Expo, Festival des traditions du monde de Sherbrooke, and The CanAsian Dance Festival.

Jeng Yi's artistic director, Charles Hong, has been drumming and dancing since 1990. From 1992 to 1996 he resided in Seoul, South Korea, where he apprenticed under Kim Duk Soo, master drummer and leader of the world-renowned group, SamulNori. He received the 2008 Dora award for Outstanding Sound Design/Composition in the dance category for his musical work on Soojung Kwon's original choreography Choonengmu, a dance work performed at the 2008 CanAsian Dance Festival. He is also an instructor of Korean drumming at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto and at York University, Department of Music.
