Canadian Children’s Opera Company

The Canadian Children’s Opera Company was founded in 1968 and is the only permanent children’s opera company in Canada. The company regularly develops, commissions and produces new operas for performance by children. The Principal Chorus performs with the Canadian Opera Company, as well as leadings arts organizations including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and Luminato Festival. The CCOC has recorded five albums, and has been broadcast on CBC Radio 2. The Juno-nominated A Midwinter Night's Dream, of the CCOC-commissioned opera by Harry Somers, was released on the Centrediscs label. The company recently won Second Place at the prestigious Summa Cum Laude Festival in Vienna, Austria.

A young farm girl saves her starving family by befriending a mysterious bear and soon finds herself matching wits with the evil Queen of the Trolls. Will she save a prince from a fate worse than death?

All roles are performed by members of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company, with a chamber orchestra conducted by CCOC Artistic Director Ann Cooper Gay. Stage direction is provided by a young Canadian superstar, Joel Ivany.
