‘Panman Pat’ McNeilly

‘Panman Pat’ McNeilly is one of Canada’s pioneer steelpannists and has the distinction of being the sole steel pan player in Toronto's first Caribana festival parade in 1967. He introduced steel pan to the curriculum of the then-Etobicoke Board of Education in the early 1980s, beginning a teaching career that earned him the prestigious Pan Pioneer Award in 2005. A member of the Ontario College of Teachers, McNeilly is a two-time calypso winner and 1991 Juno award recipient. Pat’s Steelband is one of the most sought-after acts at Caribbean festivals and special events, reviving the original spontaneity and street-inspired format of this unique instrument. With renditions of calypso and a Caribbean callaloo of musical styles, they bring a joyful Carnival arts spirit wherever they perform.
