Gerald McMaster has over 30 years international work and expertise in contemporary art, critical theory, museology and Indigenous aesthetics. McMaster will discuss Kader Attia’s exhibition The Field of Emotion.

Writing Workshop: Mending the Past

Mending the Past is a hands-on writing workshop that invites participants to consider memory and trauma, whether personal or perceived in society. After a tour and discussion of Attia’s exhibition, writers will be invited to create and share new pieces of flash fiction, poetry or memoir in response to open-ended exercises. The workshop’s supportive structure encourages writers to share personal thoughts in a safe and non-critical environment. The workshop is open to writers of all levels. Writing materials will be provided.

In Emeka Ogboh’s sound piece The Song of the Germans, the singers are all immigrants to Germany, each leaving their home country in search of a new home in Germany. Based on Ogboh’s interest in identity and place, participants will work together to create a handmade zine for newcomers to Toronto. We will share our favourite spots to play, eat and shop in the city we call home. At the end of the program, we will compile everyone's artwork to create a small publication to be shared with your family — and families across Toronto!

Tairone Bastien is a public art curator working between Toronto and Dubai. From 2011-17 he was based in the United Arab Emirates, where he established the Alserkal Programme at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, and shaped the public programming strategy for art centres in Abu Dhabi. In addition to ongoing curatorial research and projects, Tairone is currently a Global Journalism Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs. Bastien will discuss Kader Attia’s exhibition The Field of Emotion.

Earring and Pendant Fabrication (Half Day)

Kamal Al-Solaylee is the author of the national bestselling memoir Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes, which won the 2013 Toronto Book Award. His second book, Brown, was a finalist for the Governor General Literary Awards in Nonfiction and won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing. Al-Solaylee is also an associate professor of journalism at Ryerson University, and will discuss Michael Landy’s exhibition DEMONSTRATION.

Power Kids: Wearable Words

DEMONSTRATION, Michael Landy’s exhibition, is full of hand-drawn visual signs that reflect the thoughts and ideas of our local and national community. But signs are only one of the many ways people can share their thoughts and concerns with others. Throughout history, people have expressed themselves through marches, posters, flyers, buttons and books. This workshop explores the concept of “peaceful protest” by means of creating a printed t-shirt you can wear to share your message with others.

Laura Demers is an artist and museum professional who holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Ottawa, and an MA in Art History and Theory from the University of Toronto. She has worked at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery and the Canadian Pavilion during the 2017 Venice Biennale. Demers will discuss Kader Attia's exhibition The Field of Emotion.
