Winona Zelenka


Winona Zelenka, a graduate of the Toronto Royal Conservatory and of Indiana University, was a student of Vladimir Orloff, Janos Starker and William Pleeth. She had her concerto debut at the age of thirteen with the Calgary Philharmonic, and her solo debut at Carnegie Recital Hall at the age of seventeen. She began her professional career at the age of 22 as assistant principal cellist of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and subsequently held third chair positions in the Halle Orchestra of Manchester and the National Ballet Orchestra in Toronto. She has also worked with the Radio Orchestra of Saarbrucken, the BBC Symphony, the BBC Philharmonic, the Canadian Opera Company, the Esprit Ensemble and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. She has been a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2001, and most recently has won the position of Principal Cellist of the orchestra, a post which she assumed in the fall of 2004.


Carol Anderson has enjoyed a diverse career as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director, writer and educator. She began performing with Judy Jarvis’ first company, was a founding member of Toronto’s Dancemakers in 1974, and later was the company’s artistic director and resident choreographer. Author of a growing body of writing on Canadian dance and other cultural matters, Anderson holds a BFA and MA from York, and is an Associate Professor of Dance at York University.

Claudia Moore, artistic director of MOonhORsE dance theatre, has been creating and performing movement for theatre, film, multi-disciplinary collaboration and her own dance theatre productions since the late 1970's. Recent work includes the Dora award winning wishes, Small Midnight, co-choreographed by Moore and Tedd Robinson, and EVER THUS. Claudia's work has been presented in Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax, Peterborough, and Buffalo, New York. She curates the company's Older and Reckless series and conducts regular performance training workshops called Poetry in Space.

Winona Zelenka continues her journey through Bach’s six suites for solo cello. This summer, she performs the Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major for solo cello; for the last three movements of the piece she is joined by dancer Claudia Moore in the world premiere of a new work by choreographer Carol Anderson. Dance generously commissioned by Ann Southam.
