Faduma Nkrumah
July 1, 2009
Faduma Nkrumah is a singer with a musical career spanning decades. Faduma began as a singer and dancer with the National Army Orchestra in Mogadishu, performing what she calls soul music and African jazz. Radio Mogadishu put together the group Waaberi Arts from the best musicians in the National Army Band, and with support of the Ministry of Culture, Waaberi began touring outside Somalia in the early ’70s as Somali Jazz.
A Ghanaian army corporal gave Faduma the name ‘Nkrumah’ in 1973. He told her that she was very quick to learn and intelligent like Ghana’s famous pan-Africanist, President Kwame Nkrumah. From that time she became known by Somalis everywhere as Faduma Nkrumah. The political situation at home forced Faduma to leave Somalia in 1991. Arriving in Canada, she began to contribute her skills to help the large Somali community based in Toronto. To raise awareness for Somali culture and social issues, she has performed in many community events.
