Halau I Ka Wekiu - Workshop
August 23, 2009
With over 30 years of combined study, hula brothers Casupang and Baker graduated through traditional 'uniki ceremonies in August 1995 by kumu hula Robert Cazimero. Few students are provided the opportunity to continue the genealogy of their hula line as kumu hula, but Casupang and Baker were recognized for their talent and dedication to the art of hula.
Halau I Ka Wekiu is comprised of students of all ages. Women and men from age 13 and up are taught the traditions of their kumu hula's genealogy and are exposed to the creation and building on that foundation by Casupang and Baker who are establishing their own identities through their students.
One of the students of Halau I Ka Wekiu plainly phrased her love of the dance by saying, "Hula has taught me to appreciate the simple things in life and that no matter who you are, everyone dances for the same reason." Through Halau I Ka Wekiu, kumu hula Casupang and Baker honour the traditions of their past and continue the art of hula through their creative talents into the future.
