Ballet Creole - Soulful Messiah

About the company:
Ballet Creole was founded in 1990 by dancer, choreographer, drum master and educator, Patrick Parson.  Now celebrating its 21st season, Ballet Creole's vision to create harmony in diversity has never been stronger. Performing across Canada and the United States , Ballet Creole has become known as the forerunners of blacks in dance in Canada . Using a trademark style with Katherine Dunham technique as its core, the company also trains in Horton and Graham technique aesthetics and focuses on integrating traditional African and Caribbean movement and music with the contemporary reality of the arts. The company works closely with associate choreographer, Gabby Kamino, and guest choreographers such as Danny Grossman, Debbie Wilson and Jose Carret Morejon, artistic director of Danza Corpus , Cuba. The result has been both innovative and dynamic for the Canadian dance landscape.

About the choreographer:
Patrick Parson, founder and artistic director of Ballet Creole, is a native of Trinidad and Tobago and has been a dancer and musician from the age of 10. He draws much of his inspiration from the vibrant multicultural synergy of the Caribbean. He was trained in the dance and drumming styles of Guinea and Senegal by Mor Thiam, the artist director of Les Ballets Africains. In Canada, Patrick graduated from TDT (Toronto Dance Theatre) before founding Ballet Creole in 1990. He holds a Masters Degree in Dance Ethnology from York University where he has been a course director in the Faculties of Fine Arts and Kinesiology. Through extensive studies at the Katherine Dunham Institute for Humanities, Patrick has been awarded certification as a teacher of the Dunham Technique, which he teaches throughout Canada.
