About Kaha:wi Dance Theatre's Artist Salon Series:
The Artist Salon Series is a series of public and informal discussions featuring guest artists and community members alike. Intimate dialogue is encouraged through the casual and open panel. Discussions provide insight into the creative process, thematic content of a Kaha:wi Dance Theatre production, dance training and more.
About the company:
Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (ga-HAH-wee) is a dynamic, contemporary dance company that creates, produces and presents original dance theatre works drawing inspiration from contemporary and traditional Aboriginal dance and culture. The company's founding artistic director/choreographer Santee Smith (Mohawk, Turtle Clan of Six Nations Reserve) is internationally recognized for her unique blend of contemporary and traditional dance styles. Since it was founded in 2005, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre has successfully toured its productions across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Australia and Asia. Every year the company runs a four-week summer Aboriginal dance training programme in Toronto.
Hosted by artistic director/choreographer Santee Smith, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre’s TransMigration Artist Salon is an interactive panel discussion featuring curator, scholar, writer and media artist Steve Loft among others and will also include work-in-progress dance excerpts. The evening event offers personal and intimate insight into the creative process and a chance to reflect on deeper insights into contemporary expression.
Inspired by the paintings and life of iconic Ojibwe shaman-artist Norval Morrisseau, TransMigration is a dialogue, a response to his vision, struggles and brilliance as an artist. Four years in the making, TransMigration celebrates Morrisseau’s visual language through sublime dance and music, vibrating with colour, energy and sensuality. TransMigration pays homage to "The Artist" and is ultimately a reflection of humanity and the power of spirit to transform and transcend.
Kaha:wi Dance Theatre presents the world premiere of TransMigration at NextSteps, May 10-13, 2012. Click here for details.
