Founded in 1995, Darbazi is a Toronto-based ensemble that focuses exclusively on performing traditional music from the Caucasus Georgia, a mountainous country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. With repertoire ranging from sacred chants to exuberant drinking songs, Darbazi seeks to broaden the awareness of Georgia’s heritage for abundant food and wine, hospitable spirit and polyphonic songs.
In 1993 cantor Benjamin Z. Maissner created Lachan, a Toronto Jewish chamber choir, with a group of experienced Toronto-based musicians who share a love of Jewish music. The choir's name is taken from one of the Hebrew words for "melody." The Lachan Jewish Chamber Choir is committed to the performance of Jewish and Jewish-influenced music in both the liturgical and secular traditions, from the 12th to 21st centuries. The 25-voice choir is also recognized for its unique repertoire of Jewish-Canadian composers, including Louis Applebaum, Srul Irving Glick, Sid Robinovitch and John Weinzweig, among others.
