London, UK-based artist James Richards combines footage appropriated from television, movies and the Internet with film and video by himself and other artists. The end results are haunting, meditative and willfully perverse videos that ruminate on media glut with a decidedly queer bent, acting as a counterpoint to the breakneck pace of the contemporary media culture from which he draws his material. In recent years, Richards has been engaged in a cross-Atlantic video collaboration with Chicago-based artist Steve Reinke.

We are pleased to present a two-part screening featuring Canon + Vessel, a program of Richards’s recent work, followed by a selection of videos by Stuart Marshall, Anne McGuire, Duncan Campbell, and others curated by the artist and entitled Mouth Room. On 3 June, join us at The Power Plant for a discussion between Richards and Reinke about their ongoing collaboration and the confluence of their video practices, taking place as part of our 25th anniversary programming.

James Richards has had recent solo and two-person exhibitions at Chisenhale Gallery, London (2011), Trinity Square Video, Toronto (2010), Tate Britain, London (2010), and Tramway, Glasgow (2009), and was included in Coming After at The Power Plant (2011 – 12) and The Generational: Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum, New York (2009). His work is represented by Rodeo, Istanbul.
