Planet IndigenUS: Humber River Aboriginal Heritage Celebration
Everyone: (Mostly) FREE
Saturday, August 11 Sunday, August 12, 2012
10365 Islington Avenue,
Designated as a Canadian Heritage River, the Humber River offers equal delights to both nature and history enthusiasts. This weekend, during Toronto's Planet IndigenUS Festival, we would like to reaffirm our connection to the river and its Aboriginal heritage. Both days will begin with an Aboriginal ceremony and teachings led by Anishinabe Elder Shelley Charles. On Sunday, she will also offer a historical presentation, Humber Waterways and Travel Routes of Indigenous people. Other activities will include birch bark canoe storytelling sessions and demonstrations by master canoe builder, Marcelle Labelle... and canoe rides, if the weather permits!
McMichael Water Trail gallery tours will take you on a journey across time, and Canada, through the art presently on display inside the gallery, while Humber Valley Heritage Trail Association and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority leaders will offer a Discovery Hike along the banks of the Humber River.
