Celebrating: Washi and Two Cultures

August 10 – 18, 2012

Visual Arts Planet IndigenUS Off-site

Opening reception:
Wednesday, August 15, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

While it continues to this day, the 1400-year-old tradition of Japanese papermaking has had to reinvent itself and go global to help it survive.

The use of washi (traditional Japanese paper) by artists from around the world – artists who have no pre-conceived notions of how it should be used – is a boon as it opens new eyes to its many possible uses while creating a renewed appreciation for this cultural treasure.

In this exhibition, washi – in its traditional and contemporary forms – is met by indigenous artists, most of whom are using it for the first time. The results, as you will see, are a celebration – of washi and two cultures.
