Oware Canada Games

August 12 – 13, 2017

Learning Family

Using a ‘pit and pebbles’ style of game play, families reconnect with a traditional African game that has gone through Caribbean incarnations. Oware is a fun counting game developed by farmers in Africa thousands of years ago and in our high tech computerized era the game has not lost its appeal.

Oware Canada, officially launched October 23, 2010, is a project by Adisa S. Oji founder of MACPRI and is designed to stimulate interest in the African Image Revolution. Oware Canada, like the Young Poets of the Revolution (1991–1995), is predicated on self-love as a necessary ingredient in self-esteem building. Oware puts Africa on the Canadian landscape, in our homes, in our classrooms and therefore in our hearts and minds.
