IN CONVERSATION / James Richards & Steve Reinke

June 3, 2012

Lectures Visual Arts The Power Plant

Join us at The Power Plant for a discussion between London, UK-based artist James Richards and Chicago-based artist Steve Reinke about their ongoing collaboration, and the confluence of their video practices. This dialogue is part of our 25th anniversary programming.

Richards combines footage appropriated from television, movies and the Internet with film and video by himself and other artists. The end results are haunting, meditative and willfully perverse videos that ruminate on media glut with a decidedly queer bent, acting as a counterpoint to the breakneck pace of the contemporary media culture from which he draws his material. In recent years, Richards has been engaged in a cross-Atlantic video collaboration with Reinke.

James Richards has had recent solo and two-person exhibitions at Chisenhale Gallery, London (2011), Trinity Square Video, Toronto (2010), Tate Britain, London (2010), and Tramway, Glasgow (2009), and was included in Coming After at The Power Plant (2011–12) and The Generational: Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum, New York (2009). His work is represented by Rodeo, Istanbul.

Steve Reinke is an artist and writer best known for his single-channel videos, which have been screened and exhibited worldwide. The exhibition of his work as a young artist, The Hundred Videos, took place at The Power Plant in 1997. His single-channel work is distributed by Vtape and he is represented by Birch Libralato, Toronto.
