World Stage Embassy

Call for Artist Participation

Thanks to everyone who applied to be a part of the World Stage Embassy. The submission process is now closed. The 2012 World Stage Embassy will be announced soon.

Harbourfront Centre is accepting applications for World Stage Embassy members. Now entering its third year, the World Stage Embassy is designed to educate and engage audiences and create professional exchange opportunities between international, national and local artists. Made up of local art makers, Embassy members facilitate engagement between the audience and the presented performance company.

Embassy members have access to the shows in the World Stage season, and participate in group-generated artistic and professional development activities centered around the programming. Members will meet to explore issues of audience education and development. What is our role in audience development as art makers and presenters? How can we do it smarter/better?

How it works:

Collaborating together, Embassy members will self-determine how to best investigate these issues. It could be group discussions or guest lectures. There will also be a practical element, testing out theories by implementing activities such as:

  • a pre-show discussion
  • a talk show with presented artists after a performance
  • critical discussion in the form of a blog post or video
  • video interview
  • hosting a dinner for guest artists and local community members
  • something we've never ever thought of

Who we're looking for:

A few Toronto-based artists and art makers who want to expand their artistic realm through exposure to some of the world's leading contemporary theatre and dance companies. You should be an active participant in the local arts community, and be curious about audience development issues.

We define art makers as anyone involved in the creation and presentation of performing arts projects, including but not limited to writers, directors, choreographers, performers, designers, visual and multimedia artists, producers, publicists, bloggers, and so on.

We seek to assemble a group of people with varied cultural and artistic backgrounds, and a range of professional experience.

When does this happen:

The World Stage 2012 season runs from February to May, 2012. Commitments during that time will include attending shows, any ancillary programming created by the group, and an occasional meeting or two. Embassy members should also be available to meet approximately once per month during the fall of 2011 to determine group activities during the season.
