Heritage Singers
August 3, 2009
The Heritage Singers were formed by Grace Carter-Henry Lyons whose folk musical experience began with the Jamaican Folk Singers under the leadership of Olive Lewin in her native Jamaica. The group began when some friends got together to sing away the blues of the harsh cold winter.
Over the years, the group has developed a rich and varied repertoire. The language of these songs ranges from discernible Standard English to Creole with an English lexical base, to French Patois and even hybrid Spanish.
For performances, the songs are grouped with dance steps to give thematic cohesion and staged to provide visual aesthetics. Sometimes a rendition is a cappella, but usually, the singing is accompanied by guitars and drums.
The Heritage Singers have performed internationally at places such as The Sivo International Dance Folk Festival in Holland, Ribnitz-Damgarten, Germany, Tainan County-International Festival in Taiwan, Zacatecas Mexico and Guayana, Venezuela.
The group celebrated its 30th anniversary June 9, 2007.
