For the past five years, Batucada Carioca has focused upon the most traditional and original rhythms of Rio's samba schools, carrying with them the joy, fidelity and soul of true samba, and the authentic sound of what is widely considered the greatest show on earth – the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval.
Led by Maninho Costa, nephew of the most respected drum core leader in Rio de Janeiro, Maninho's group in Toronto involves lovers of traditional samba and has become a passionate community of musical artists.
Bearing the colours Blue and White, the group pays homage to Rio de Janeiro's Portela samba school. Batucada Carioca has a heavy swing and is melodically accompanied by cavaquinho, guitar and trombone, as well as various singers from Toronto’s Brazilian community.
