Curatorial Statement
Expressions of Brazil, celebrating contemporary Brazilian music, arts and culture, will expand perceptions about Brazil and showcase the diversity of Brazilian culture. An eclectic mix of arts and cultural disciplines will be featured, including: music, dance, film, visual arts, theatre, family activities, workshops and culinary arts.
Expressions of Brazil will connect Brazil and Canada by showcasing both international and local artists in a variety of disciplines. In keeping with Harbourfront Centre's "globalocal" theme, Expressions of Brazil will draw on both local talent who have embraced Brazilian culture and some of the best talent direct from Brazil.
Like Canada, Brazil is diverse with many different cultural and regional differences. Five centuries of cultural evolution makes it one of the world's most ethnically diverse nations. Brazil is also rich in history, which is still very evident in the contemporary Brazil of today. The country is a fusion of its historical and cultural past and a fusion of many cultural groups (European, Asian, African and Native Indians), who share one nationality and one language.
