The Speedy

UnSpun Theatre (Canada)

May 15-18, 2014

About the Performance

A Fresh Ground new works commission.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget: the power of the sea when you are safe on dry land; that no matter our station at present we will all face the same end; that most of what we know about our past is really just storytelling. In this world premiere, UnSpun Theatre constructs a performance installation to tell the story of The HMS Speedy, a schooner that sank in our very own Lake Ontario some 200 years ago, and the lives, secrets and injustices that went down with it. In this strange, yet true, story of shipwreck, murder and magic, you’ll be immersed in a surprising emblem of contemporary Toronto, and a history you didn’t even know it had.

Since 2004, Toronto collective UnSpun Theatre, currently led by Chris Hanratty and Shira Leuchter, have been creating award-winning work that consistently stretches the boundaries of the current English Canadian theatre tradition. With The Speedy, the trend continues.

About the company

Since 2004, UnSpun Theatre has been creating entertaining, award-winning work that consistently stretches the boundaries of the current English Canadian theatre tradition. They’ve been the springboard for many of Toronto’s most inventive theatre artists. The company believes in a collaborative, artist-driven approach to creating theatre. Their work is the result of collision and confluence, of shaping a single creation from several creative voices.

The Speedy – Opening night preshow event

Thursday, May 15, 2014

Join us at 7pm for tea and a preshow chat leading up to UnSpun’s The Speedy.

When we explore history in live performance, we can open up its questions, collisions, and confluences in ways that usual history can’t. We are no longer only listeners – we are explorers.

That’s why Harbourfront Centre has invited professors Matthew Sergi and Denise Cruz, from the University of Toronto, to lead us in an interactive discussion that will prime audiences to explore The Speedy. Bringing together audience members and educators, this event will stir up our questions and get us thinking about what Toronto history can and should look like.

Admission is free with the purchase of a ticket to The Speedy.
