Letter from the Artistic Director

World Stage.

Together those two words evoke a powerful proposition. It’s one that aims to challenge, provoke, entertain, evoke, stir, summons, and pose questions that ask the viewer to understand his or her place in the world.

This year I’m enthusiastic to present you with a playbill anchored by two Irish productions which book-end the season, a sampling from a country whose literary giants have trod the path for their contemporary performance practitioners. You’ll encounter the exceptionally accomplished work of international superstars Meg Stuart, Rachid Ouramdane and DV8 Physical Theatre, as well as Toronto’s Ame Henderson, who is well on her way to becoming one of Canada’s best exports. You’ll see radical interpretations and re-visioning of the classics in Hamlet and Giselle. You’ll laugh at the wacky, wonderful and highly skilled performances by Rebecca Northan in the triumphant return of Blind Date and meet face to face with the pop culture phenom, Splintergroup. You’ll also witness an incredibly moving and joyous show by some of the most raucous and spirited teenagers you will ever meet.

I'm happy to include Canadian work along side the best from around the world, because Toronto and Canada are part of the world and – not unlike organic produce – highlight that local is good and necessary for a community to thrive and grow. I’m determined to put the emphasis on live performance to provoke a fresh re-imagining of “dance” and “theatre”. I'm proud to bring you a programme of work that I love, that moves me to tears, that makes me laugh, makes me dream bigger, want more…in other words, makes me feel more human.

I encourage you to take in all the performances. Our season-long model allows for time in your busy schedules to see the hottest international festival fare in manageable engagements. Our affordable ticket prices, free ancillary events and unprecedented Flex Pass encourage you to take advantage and experience the full spectrum of performances selected for your discerning tastes.

Are you up to the challenge for enormous payback – to feel something wonderful, startling or astonishing?

World Stage — Now for something completely different.
