A maverick creator returns with a stunning new work.

Alain Platel's creations have profoundly influenced contemporary dance all over the world. Now, he comes to World Stage with Out of Context − for Pina, a major hit with audiences and critics alike since its premiere in Brussels.

Platel has focused on developing a body language to physically translate exaggerated human emotions, exploring themes of hysteria and madness through movement. In his latest work, he continues this investigation, creating performance as a kind of ritual, a gathering, a world of unexpected beauty and emotional power. Making this piece especially poignant is that Platel's approach is a dedication to the late modern dance legend, Pina Bausch.

Recently, a jury of 29 European critics, composed by Tanz magazine, selected Out of Context - For Pina as production of the year.

It is the second time that the German publication has awarded the work of Alain Platel. In 2007, les ballets C de la B was proclaimed company of the year, together with Rosas, another Belgian dance company.

About the company

les ballets C de la B (formerly called Les Ballets Contemporains de la Belgique, a provocative reference to the company's unorthodox origins and its rejection of the aesthetics of academic ballet) is a contemporary dance and theatre collective despite its name. Known for powerful theatrical dance performances and a striking cinematic style, the company has gone on to international recognition as part of the "Flemish Wave." The company last dazzled Toronto audiences with Foi and La Tristessa Complice.
