Jennifer MacDonald is a recent graduate of the Sheridan College Honours Bachelor of Craft and Design. Her textile practice embraces surface design, printing, dye processes and sewing. Recently she has begun to study the ancient craft of felting. Wool felt provides a material perspective for the simple, pared-down shapes and colour play that generally inform her approach to design.
Jennifer begins her work as she imagines an artist might approach a blank canvas. Cutting shapes from self-made and purchased pre-felts she lays them on a hand-dyed woven substrate. Through a process of wet felting, the surface fibres mesh with the woven substrate creating visual interest in pattern and colour. Jennifer is excited about the expressive lines that felt enables.
Jennifer was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Textiles) at Harbourfront Centre in 2020.
