Senegalese master drummer El Hadji Mbaye aka Élage is a descendant of a griot family, and music, dance and percussion are all part of his life. He started playing the traditional drums of Senegal at the age of 8, of which are comprised of 5 types of drums, called the sabaars, as well as the djémbé and talking drum (tama).
Traditionally, sabaars were used to communicate with other villages, and the different rhythms correspond to phrases and could be heard for over 15 kilometers. Sabaar is also recognized as a style of music performed at celebrations, weddings and cultural events.
